Social Media :: Social Dilemma

Every coin has two sides. Similarly, social media also have two faces. It's totally up to you how you deal with them.

The good side of the presence on all the social media platforms is you used to be bombarded with a lot of information at every instance, so if you find a really interesting thread, you can dig the very fast following through different social media networks, libraries, webs, and get at the bottom of that thing quickly. Also due to social media whole world comes closer than ever before, exposure increases in every aspect. All information is available at one click.

Nowadays we are all vulnerable to social approval, looking for that imaginary image that is built based on compliments and likes. It is a weird way to display your life, just showcasing a good side like a glass case, an unrealistic version of life that everyone nowadays cultivates and also tries hard to maintain that image. Rather than what you think about yourself from your point of view you always look at how other people are looking or thinking, we care what other people think of us. We get rewarded by hearts, likes, thumbs and we conflate that with real values and truth. Your brain craves more and more to maintain your virtual image on every compliment or like your brain is rewarded with small dopamine hits. But one day someone comes in and he easily tears it (image) down, because it doesn't take many insults to cancel out lots of compliments and a pile of likes. Empty scrolling only costs you time, money and those are the most important things.

We have less control over who we are and what we think, what we really believe. All platforms are created in such a way to consume your time by making it addictive to you with the help of strong algorithms and great UI designs, a bunch of engineers constantly working on it to make it better. Every platform always tries to get more and more people on platforms and once the user is on a platform they try their best to engage you with some amazing, addictive content. With each platform's specific and unique revenue cycle, they target the audience in various ways to generate revenue. Currently a lot of privacy and security conflict going between Apple and Facebook.Amazon and Google are accused of anti-competitive business practices. Facebook and Google are criticized for their lack of data privacy.

To get rid of  them or to minimize your screen time implements some of the following points:

  • Try social media detox after several days.
  • Turn off all the notifications.
  • Use a grey color scheme or black and white color scheme for the device.
  • Aware while consuming content.
  • You have to take control over your social media presence rather than any platform just engage you for several hours.
  • If possible delete the account from useless platforms permanently, which is quite difficult but the best way to come on track.
